Antibiotics
can be used in many ways. They can be used in hospitals to cure patients. But
70% of antibiotics that are sold in the United States are used in industrial
farming to use on animals to increase their weight, produce more meat, grow
faster etc… This makes them fat and produce meat faster and more efficiently.
The two main uses of antibiotics are:
Therapy
are antibiotics used for animals in order to treat or prevent animal illnesses
to spread or to infect. In industrial farms, animals live very close together
with very little space (not enough to move around or lie down!) therefore they
are infected by a disease very easily. Farmers use antibiotics for animals that
the farmer thinks will be able to survive the disease or doesn’t require a lot
of cost to treat it. The other animals, that require surgery or a lot of
medicine will be left to die.
Growth
promotion are other uses of antibiotics. They are used to help animal
grow rapidly, increase the daily weight gain of the animals and increase
quality of the livestock. It increases the output of each livestock a lot, therefore are very popular to farmers who want more profit with less expenses. They are some that cause huge health issues and make them very weak.
