Industrial Farming

Industrial Farming, also known as intensive animal farming, industrial livestock production and factory farming are ways of modern farming that produces massive amounts of livestock including; cattle, pigs, chickens, turkeys, sheep and goats.

Their aims are to produce the highest output using low cost using machinery and biotechnology. High stocking density in these farms require the pesticides and antibiotics in order to prevent the spreading diseases. They are also used to increase growth speed of the animals in order to increase the amount of flesh available.

The animals are often treated in poor conditions, jammed into small cages, force-fed, tortured by humans (workers) and unwanted animals that are sick or weak are left to die and rot in garbage.

This action is becoming very popular worldwide as of 2006, 74% of world's pigs, 43% of beef, 68% of eggs were produced using the factory farming according to the Worldwatch Institute (an environmental research organisation based in Washington D.C).

  1. I agree its a really terrible thing... but what are the alternatives? How can I continue eating meat without eating produce from factory farms... or are you saying i should become a vegetarian?

    1. I advice you to buy from a local farmer who you believe does not use antibiotics and other substances.

  3. No you dont have to necessarily become a vegetarian. You can try to find shops where they actually say where their meat comes from because there are actually some shops, more specifically butcher shops that tell you where their meat comes from. I recommend you buy your meat from actual butcher shops instead of super markets because there is a more likely chance that the butchers that have their own shops know where their meat comes from. :) Hope this helps.

  4. Why have people found it necessary to start industrial farming? Is it because we are simply eating too much meat? Or is it more price-driven?
Is it possible to keep costs low *and* keep to the "old methods"?
Are you suggesting we raise our expectations (and possibly therefore also our food bills)?
